Notes and Data on the ground

CLASS: On-the-Ground Journalism

The role of a journalist is speaking truth to power and helping give voice to those who might otherwise not be heard. And in a time when “fake news” permeates social and mainstream media, on-the-ground, fact-based reporting has become essential to the sustainability of global democracies. But, in addition to understanding these values and principles, modern journalists need to develop the right skills in order to expand their stories’ reach.

DESCRIPTION:

Over four weeks, students will sharpen their creative, analytical, and storytelling skills and gain experience producing multimedia content under the guidance of a long-time foreign correspondent. The instructor will meet each student one-on-one or as a group, depending on mutual availability via Skype, Zoom, or other online platforms. Students will also be invited to accompany the instructor on reporting assignments when possible.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will identify a story that is of particular interest to them at the beginning of the course. Their individualized research will reflect this topic, and full assignment instructions will be provided separately. The majority of coursework will be completed independently, following an agreed-upon schedule of writing and feedback delivery.
